Area Description: This Project area is engaged in a long-term, population dynamics study of Sevengill sharks (Notorynchus cepedianus) in the San Diego area. The Project Manager, Michael Bear has been diving regularly in the San Diego area since 2000, averaging about 100 dives per year, mainly in the area of La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cove, Wreck Alley and Pt Loma. Reports of Sevengill sharks were to the best of Michael's memory, nonexistent before 2007.  However, from 2007 through the present, divers have been regularly reporting Sevengill shark encounters off the coast of San Diego. Numbers of sightings are currently being uploaded and stored to the Project Baseline database in collaboration with sevengillsightings.org. The undeniable presence of the Sevengill shark in these waters warrents formal documention.
