Currently, the first question is: “Do you believe the Word of God which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the only rule of faith and practice?” It was argued that omitting these two words would save having to explain to others what we mean by “contained in”. To my surprise, he was quite knowledgeable about the very documents I had been reading. In one point, indeed, the Modernist condemned by Pius X differs from his intellectual brothers: he remains, and wishes to remain, inside the Catholic Church, in order to leaven it with his ideas; the other stands frankly outside, an enemy or a supercilious student of religious evolution.

While the Christian Manifesto provided the general instruction of educating Christians on the links between Christianity and imperialism, it was articles produced later by socialist Protestant leaders that explained in greater details the links between those two. They were even more so for clerics because public authorities quickly removed ministers from theologically incorrect factions. The philosopher David Hume was also, and writers Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Daniel Defoe, were Presbyterians too.

In 1932 the Wesleyan Methodists, the Primitive Methodists and the United Methodists merged to form the Methodist Church in Great Britain. It is all old wives' fables to talk of the change of the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day. But it is not to be exercised, in point of fact, by all the Church's members; it is to be exercised by some only. Consequently, in addition to oppos- ing the efforts of Protestants to introduce character education into public school curricula he also contested the practices of Bible reading and prayer in public education as a further breach of the boundary between church and state (Hart 1994: ch. 6).8 Indeed, the political agenda involved in Machen's Presbyterian con- servatism puts his religious intolerance in a different light.
