God is the giver of salvation and the constant provider of grace; he is the Creator of the world and the constant sustainer of all that is in it. At present the brunt of the battle rages around the writings called Johannine (the fourth Gospel, the three Epistles of John, and the Apocalypse). It features new scholarship (all volumes published 1976-1984), book introductions and outlines, bibliographies, and transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words.

The word of God came to Jeremiah: "When you finish reading this book, bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates: and say, Thus shall Babylon sink, to rise no more, because of the evil that I am bringing upon her" (Jer.51:63-64). It is likely that he has in this case found a scripture passage to provide a pedigree for a widespread hagiographical mytheme, the divine paternity of the hero, which had already passed into the Christian tradition, unless of course this is the very door through which it passed. It is revealing that Matthews Magi learn from scribal exegesis of Micah 5:2 that the messiah must be born in Bethlehem.

If you have this commentary you need not have another, unless you just want one. Altogether, the story of Jesus was built up upon Bible passages, which Mark, who writes for non-Jewish readers, omits in most cases, just as he omits the debate with Satan. The series is known for having a stellar list of evangelical contributors (see list at the end of the review), many of whom have written on the same texts in other, more technical commentaries. Verse 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.

There is nothing said of scripture being fulfilled here. Writers of the PNTC volumes interact with the most important, informed contemporary debate yet avoid undue technical detail. Not all books were completed by the time of Vatican II (1962-1965). Beale, Johnson, and Poythress are all better than Hendriksen, but the latter was my first introduction to reading the book in light of the principle of recapitulation (in which the book contains multiple parallel portrayals, each of which describes events during the course of the church age from slightly different perspectives).

The point is that this dreadful period lasted from June 168 B. These appealed to the masses and made converts in large numbers. A restoration of some traditional familiar phraseology. I think that this is implied by Kruse’s comment that the earlier use of the phrase primarily meant “boundary markers,” but the text is not referred to in the introduction or commentary.

Like Saul and his companion, the two pairs enter the city. To such a man God makes the greatest promise of all--"I will be his God and he shall be my son." Here the rebellious son is accepted in love, not executed. Though the basic inspiration of the parable comes thus from Deuteronomy, Luke owes the building blocks from another source, the Odyssey. This allusion shows that Paul means apostles and prophets as the foundation, 1b.
