Religious intolerance brought many, many people to the Americas. In the 1550s, however, Servetus had no friends. He was regarded as vicious and dangerous, a holder of ideas so pernicious that they had to be stamped out without mercy. He helped break the Protestant religion from the catholic organization of the Roman Catholic Church. The world beyond was made a palpable reality in the world here and now. She was one of the mainstays of the century-old feral cat colony in our neighborhood.

Some Western, non-Catholic, Christian groups are labeled as Protestant, even if the sect acknowledges no historical connection to Luther, Calvin, or the Anabaptists. The basic tenets of Calvinism are Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Solus Christus, Sola Gratia, Soli Deo Gloria. The Catholic Church teaches that God came and redeemed the world, and that …mankind has a choice: to either freely accept God and live according to His revealed teachings or to reject Him.

He discussed the tension involved in divine sovereignty and human responsibility, gave a brief outline of the “Five Points,” and delivered a biblical and pastoral defense of “Eternal Security/Perseverance of the Saints.” He pointed to Charles Spurgeon as one who maintained a proper emphasis on both divine sovereignty and human responsibility (42–53).

The church has a considerable following in England, where it was introduced in 1877, now under the episcopal jurisdiction of Bishop Philip X. He had spent little on himself, but given generously both in money and service, so he left behind him only a hundred and seventy dollars, but an incalculable fortune in fame and consecrated influence; and from him Geneva inherited faith, education, government, brave citizens, and pride in an honored name.

Annual baptisms declined from about 346,000 in 1970 to around 257,000 in 1990. It also helped establish America as the economic powerhouse in the world.
