As Calvin's Geneva became a leading center of Reformed thought, Calvin's version of Reformed Christianity appealed to many folks because of its systematic coherence and the way it pulled together ideas from a bunch of different early Reformers, while holding a very sharp line against Catholicism. It was an aristocracy which, with its character indelebilis, was divided from the eternally damned remainder of humanity by a more impassable and in its invisibility more terrifying gulf, than separated the monk of the Middle Ages from the rest of the world about him, a gulf which penetrated all social relations with its sharp brutality.

Convergentism is also liberal in its stance toward the ordination of women and divorce and remarriage. It is probably more accurate to say that the Tabernacle both revealed and concealed the divine Presence. Photo booths are now a hot sensation everywhere you go. Most non-denominational churches are careful to be tolerant of differing theological veiwpoints, as long as they are not contrary to biblical teachings. Separation of church and state, a principle that other Protestants came to hold late in the 18th century, began to break the purely Protestant hold on northwest Europe. He entered a monastery at age 22 in the year 1505.

Is the Catholic Church so special that "everybody else" is a Protestant? Once sacraments become purely symbolic in nature, there’s little reason to perform them. The philosopher David Hume was also, and writers Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Daniel Defoe, were Presbyterians too. In 1696 the Dutch Church of the City of New York was incorporated. Some also showed themselves to be critical (at points) of the first generation of Protestant leaders in the English Reformation.

After returning to Geneva, he revised the laws of the city. Ritschl, A Critical History of the Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation, trans. No better account of this remarkable (though now largely obsolete) system has been drawn out than Möhler's in his "Symbolism or Doctrinal Differences."

The country seethed with demand for justice and equity by the Civil Rights movement which spawned the student rights movement, and then the antiwar movement, the women's rights movement, the ecology movement, and the gay rights movement. We saw above, under argument 3, that the Mosaic Law does not set forth a civil code, and thus that the phrase "judicial law of Moses" is theologically erroneous. As the FRG has become an increasingly secular society, the centuries-old traditional authority of the Roman Catholic Church in matters of morality has declined, especially among German youth.
