Back in Ireland in the early part of the twentieth century, Ireland suffered great bloodshed as Irish Catholics made a concerted push for self rule. A ring is always placed inside the barmbrack. They are so childishly bewildered, or so deeply oppressed by caste and starvation as to be practically inaccessible to missionary efforts. The howling at the moon is suggestive of a werewolf to modern readers, but more specifically it relates Glenarvon to the vampire who is traditionally restrengthened by moonlight, only implied here in Glenarvon but expanded upon in later vampire tales.
